This project was created in May 2024, the current appearance of the official app may be different from the one presented in this case study.
As a long-time Nikon camera user, I have the (dis)pleasure of using their mobile app. For this reason, I wanted to improve the design of the app from both a visual and usability perspective.
My main goal was to create a layout that is more intuitive and comfortable to use. To achieve this, I made the following changes:
- moved the most frequently used controls (navigation bar, photo information, camera mode in wireless viewfinder screen) from the top to the bottom - now the app can be comfortably operated with one hand,
- each active status is indicated in yellow - previously, an active Bluetooth connection was grayed out, but a disabled auto link feature was color-coded,
- the size of the camera image has been reduced to make more room for buttons, resulting in a more space-optimized look.
In addition, I made minor changes to the gallery and photo preview. In the new version there is an option to choose a grid view - 2 or 3 columns of photos. The controls on the photo preview screen have been swapped places - photo data is available at the bottom, and the delete button has been moved to the top to prevent unwanted changes.
I also wanted to change the wireless viewfinder screen. The new layout has more visible and easier to read buttons and the photo preview has been moved to the center of the screen to balance the layout.
